8 things to consider when working out your reno

Any renovation, big or small, has at least one thing in common – it needs to be planned right to achieve the results you want.
Here’s 8 things to consider when working out your reno.
Budget
It may seem obvious but without a budget there’s no way you will know what you can afford to do. Running low on funds can lead to lengthy delays as you save up to complete that bedroom remodelling, for example. And no-one wants to sleep in the kids’ room any longer than they have to, right?

Keep costs under control

Once you have a budget, stick to it, or, if you add more for that pendant light you just have to have for the dining room, save it somewhere else.
As well, keeping things simple while not compromising your vision can keep costs manageable. Think hard about choices of materials, for example – using something exotic may cost you more not only to buy but for your tradie to work with. It’s all a balancing act.
Don’t bite off too much
Tackling each project one piece at a time is good for the budget, stress levels and quite possibly the end result. If what you’re planning is too overwhelming, dividing the jobs up is a good move.
Time it right
Depending on the climate, renovating in winter can be less than pleasant. The cold wind whistling through the hole where in the new picture window is going isn’t anyone’s idea of a good time. As well, warmer weather renos mean you can do more living outside during the project. Who cares if the kitchen’s out of action when you can fire up the barbie for dinner.
There’s an app for that
The reno boom has brought with it a slew of apps to help folks like you decide and plan projects. Check out online peer reviews to find the right ones for your needs.
Keep it real
Sadly, you’re not on a TV show, so keep your dream reno from becoming an unreal fantasy. As you plan, take time out for a reality check … can we actually do this/afford this? An en suite for everyone’s bedroom, underground garage and indoor spa would be awesome but can you achieve it all?

Get it inspected

Have a professional building inspection done so you will know that your home is structurally sound and can support you planned renos. It will also discover any potential problems lurking about before they bite you during the actual build.
